They’re the beacon of late Autumn, the big orange fruit that tastes like a vegetable and looks like a space hopper.
And even better, this year, British pumpkins are set to be massive. Farmers are predicting a bumper crop of giant pumpkins this year thanks to almost perfect weather conditions over the summer months.
Farm workers at Church Farm, in Wirral, discovered that their organic pumpkins were much bigger than they expected several weeks ago.
Every year, the award-winning farm, which has been run by former firefighter Steve Ledsham and his family for the past 24 years, grows over 2000 organic pumpkins as part of it popular Halloween extravaganza.
Steve said: “Our team noticed a few weeks ago that the pumpkins were a lot bigger than previous years. Over the summer months we had a lot of wet and warm weather, which has meant perfect growing conditions for pumpkins.
“I think we are going to have some absolute whoppers by the time they are ready to harvest in early October.”
The Halloween event runs every day throughout October half term, from Saturday October 21st – 29th. It will also run during weekends on October 7th – 8th and 14-15th.
Among the attractions this year are:
- Pumpkin picking
- Weird Science puppet show
- The beastly barrel train ride with monsters
- Bird of Prey display
- Pumpkin pies, pecan pies, pumpkin-spiced scones and other treats available at the Munch Coffee Shop
The Halloween event also includes access to all the usual farm attractions for the day too. Race round the pedal go-kart track, see the farm animals or dig in our huge indoor beach.
There are local, organic fruit and vegetables for sale in the farm shop as well as treats for both adults and children alike in the coffee shop, including the ice cream parlour. There’s no need to book for Halloween Half-Term- just turn up and purchase tickets on the day.
